Southern Gerontological Society 38th Annual Meeting "New Horizons in Aging: Advances in Research and Practice" April 6th -9th 2017 Asheville, North Carolina

Aging Projects, Inc. will be following up our 2016 Southern Gerontological Society's Annual Meeting presentation answering attendees questions on how distant family can be part of the expanded caregiving team at the upcoming Southern Gerontological Society's 38th Annual Meeting "New Horizons in Aging: Advances in Research and Practice" April 6th - 9th 2017 in Asheville, North Carolina.

Families are becoming more physical distant as their children move around the county. This creates a need for long-distance children to be able to access necessary information in the locations where their loved ones resides, in order to provide assistance when they cannot be there to physically provide help. With Aging Projects, Inc., www.AgingProjectsInc.org long-distance caregivers can now be part of the caregiving team assisting their loved ones to maintain the safe and quality of their lives as they age in place. The website is client-centric starting with one simple question, "What Kind of Help Do You Need?" It lists the most commonly needed services and products from Providers whose services are available in a limited geographic area. A board selection of Providers covering 14+ categories, multiple subcategories and bundled services (a specific set of services usually offered by a larger nonprofit Provider). It's accurate, up-to-date. Inclusive, not exclusive. Accessible. User friendly. User safety-focused. With Aging Projects, Inc., clients and their families have more control over their circumstances. They feel empowered and have choices.

Aging Projects, Inc. Expands the Popular Online Resource Assisting Aging in Place.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aging Projects, Inc.  Expands the Popular Online Resource Assisting Aging in Place.

HENDERSONVILLE, NC.  March 17, 2017 Aging Projects, Inc. (www.AgingProjectsInc.org) announced today the expansion of the popular online resource directory designed to assist individuals to age in place.  It is specially designed to help seniors, local and distant caregivers, community organizations and faith based organizations in an easy-to-navigate format.

According to James Kelly President & CEO “we have seen an increase in requests from individuals looking to age in place in their own home (in Western North Carolina) and through-out the United States.  This follows the National Institute on Aging findings “that the America’s population 65-and-over is expected to double over the next three decades and life expectancy is projected to increase.”  “10,000 baby boomers are expected to retire every year for the next 19 years and they are seeking solutions to age in place.”

Initially Aging Projects, Inc. online resource directory www.AgingProjectsInc.org was designed to assist individuals in the limited geographic area of Henderson County.  Since its inception, it became clear that many individuals outside of Henderson County (and North Carolina) had the same pressing questions.  How can I age in place?  What resources are available in my community to age in place?   Do I have options to age in place?   It became evident that expanding the online resource directory was needed.  Aging Projects, Inc. is proud to announce that the online resource directory www.AgingProjectsInc.org has been expanded to include Henderson County, Buncombe County, Transylvania County and Polk County.   Expansion into Haywood County and Madison County are currently under development.    According to Kelly “we are exploring expansion of our localized national model to age in place on a statewide national level.”  “Aging Projects, Inc. is very excited to have been selected to present “Aging at Home- Expanding the Caregiving Team to Include Distant Family” at the prestigious (ASA) American Society on Aging - Aging in America Conference March 20-24, 2017 Chicago, Ill.

The Fourth Annual “Aging in Place.  It’s In Your Future.” National Conference will take place September 21, 2017.  The annual conference features national, regional and local presenters on aging in place.  Engaging informative workshops.  Gather resources from Aging Projects, Inc. Providers.  Network.  Learn about local resources in your community to age in place successfully.  Free health screenings.  Special exhibits.  National awards.  Lunch.   A raffle and so much more.  Free of charge due to sponsor support.  Registration opens July 1, 2017 at www.AgingProjectsInc.org look for the registration stamp.

CONFERENCE PRESENTERS

Dr. Kathleen Rehl, our keynote presenter, is an award-winning author and speaker, passionate about assisting widows and their advisors with financial and life transitions. Seventy percent of wives outlive their husbands and almost one million women a year are widowed. While grief, emotions and a cognitive disconnect from the loss can sabotage thinking at this critical time, when armed with practical information, women (and less frequently men) can plan ahead and avoid many common pitfalls. Kathleen is an award-winning author and speaker, recipient of ten national and international awards, whose work has been featured in dozens of publications.

• Our second keynote presenter is Dr. Joanne Helppie. A specialist in Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, and founder of Aging Projects, Inc., Dr. Helppie will present on "Thoughts from a Geriatrician's Point of View – An Aging and Medical Minute". A geriatrician is a physician who focuses on senior health including the prevention and treatment of disability and disease in old age. Geriatricians are board-certified in family medicine or internal medicine and have obtained the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine. As our population ages in North Carolina, geriatricians will play a larger role in health care.

•  Caroline Farmer of the N.C. Department of Justice, Attorney Generals Office, Victims and Citizens Section will educate, raise awareness and inform conference guests on the latest scams that prey upon the unknowing, from basic telemarketing to sophisticated international criminals on the internet. This topic is of such importance that this presentation will be offered twice.

• Certified Elder Law Attorney Caroline T. Knox practices from The Van Winkle Law Firm's Asheville and Hendersonville offices. Caroline is a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law and was among the first attorneys to be certified in North Carolina as an elder law specialist, and is currently one of only thirteen attorneys in North Carolina who have earned the designation Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA) by The National Elder Law Foundation.

Physical therapist Lori Hart, MSPT, and occupational therapist Courtney Maloney, OTR, will jointly present about one of the leading preventable injuries to older people – falls. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, one in every three adults age 65 and older falls. Approximately one quarter of individuals who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries, which can make it harder to live independently. Lori and Courtney will demonstrate the proper fall recovery techniques during their presentation.
