Anna Hicks, MD

Today we honor Aging Projects, Inc., 2022 President’s Award Recipient.
The President’s Award is the highest honor we bestow upon an organization or individual.
Many things come to mind when we think about previous recipients and todays honorary. They are passionate about their field of endeavor. They deeply care about the individuals they serve. In other words, a partnership between community stakeholders to “build a culture of aging in place.”

• 2022 – VOLUNTER OF THE YEAR
Jim Steinbaugh
(and Baxter)
Today we honor Aging Projects, Inc., 2022 Volunteer of the Year Award Recipients.
Today’s recipients are like rare gemstones. Sparkling and brilliant. Once you meet them you will realize that they are quite unique and rare. A rare occurrence in nature. Now we aren’t taking about gemstones here. We’re talking about Baxter and the guy at the other end. You ask, at the end of what? Well, here’s where the story begins of this unique partnership bringing sunshine into the lives of people who need it and deserve it the most.
He was born an “old Soul.” Such temperament. A polite youngster. A “responsible” teenager (at least in public). As he grew, he was certified as an AKC Canine Good Citizen. Then he received national certification from The Alliance of Therapy Dogs and the team of Baxter and Jim went to “work”.
Now Baxter doesn’t consider what he does work. He brings love and a gentle touch to all he meets at assisted living facilities, adult day care and the YMCA. With his immense soul, gaze, and extension of his paw each of his “people” receive a special touch to meet their needs at the moment. Some will look and talk to him. Sometimes he sits down or looks up like they were old friends. In a visit to a blind gentleman’s room Baxter leans into his friend’s leg and positions himself within arm’s reach. Baxter brings “magic” to each of people. The most poignant example of this was his effect on a gentleman who met Baxter only three times before he died. Baxter’s presence took him back to the happiest of childhood memories that he shared with Baxter and Jim, the guy at the other end of the leash.
It is my honor to present Aging Projects, Inc. 2022 Volunteer of the Year Awards to Baxter “therapy dog extraordinaire” and Jim Steinbaugh “the guy on the other end of the leash.”

FISH of Henderson County, Inc
Today we honor Aging Projects, Inc. Provider of the Year 2019.
Our Aging Projects, Inc. providers are committed to maintaining the highest level of professional service. They are committed to honest dealings, integrity, compassion and kindness. They have one simple goal in mind "Helping People live Safety and Happily in Their Own Homes" no matter where they live. Home is where the heart is.
When we look at the challenges we face as we age in place several come to mind. One in particular has a profound impact. Transportation or the lack of transportation. The ability to get from point A to B. Think about it. When was the last time you jumped in your car to go out. You just did it. You didn’t have to think about it. For many of us in Western North Carolina that’s not the case. There exists a unique non-profit organization in Henderson County that is committed to resolving transportation issues. They are not a seafood restaurant, nor a aquarium shop. Their mission is to provide Henderson County residents with free transportation to a doctor’s office, a dentist’s office, a medical center, mental health appointment, therapy, dialysis and more. Without them, many would not be able to get to a doctor to receive, in many cases lifesaving treatments. They may not be able to drive, have no family or friends who can take them or cannot afford a taxi. It is my honor to present Aging Projects, Inc. That brings to mind a particular provider and how events in our early developmental years can have a profound impact on the course of our life. This provider established a special relationship with her grandmother who lived with her family from a very young age. • 2016 – President's Award
Trina Stokes, Executive Director
Council on Aging for Henderson County
The President’s Award is the highest honor we bestow upon an organization or individual.
As we grow older, increasing challenges can make it difficult to remain independent. A few readily come to mind. The ability to shop, prepare and serve a nutritious meal. Becoming socially isolated due to distant family and friends. Suddenly becoming homebound due to a change in health or financial situation. These are real challenges that many of our neighbors increasingly face every day of the week.
We are fortunate to have in Henderson County a non-profit organization that has made a profound difference in the lives of these individuals, allowing them to overcome these challenges.
While statistics can be boring, the shear impact of their endeavors are astonishing. During July and August alone, volunteers contributed over 6,000 hours to meet the needs of these individuals. 150 received in-depth assistance. And what is truly amazing is over 10,000 meals were served by a friendly face to homebound individuals and at the local socialization center. The result: What we all crave. Human interaction. Socialization. A warm nutritious meal. Life is good. All made possible through the Council on Aging for Henderson County, Meals on Wheels Program & Lunch at the Sammy Williams Center.
It is my honor to present the 2016 President’s Award to Tina Stokes, Executive Director, Council on Aging for Henderson County for the life changing Meals on Wheels Program and Lunch at the Sammy Williams Center.

• 2016 – Advocacy and Awareness Award
Henderson County Sheriff’s Reassurance Program
Today we recognize one of the many unique programs offered by Henderson County that enhances the lives of all it touches. It is a program that clearly demonstrates the commitment to its mission to serve, protect and enhance our community’s quality of life.
For many senior residents of Henderson County who live alone, regular, pre-scheduled calls reduce isolation and provide a routine safety check. It’s always nice to hear a familiar voice on the end of the line asking how you are doing and wishing you a nice day.
Here’s how the program works. Seniors sign up for the program and must call each morning by 10:00 am to verify their well-being. If a call is not received, communications personal will attempt to contact the person or family member. If unsuccessful, a deputy is sent to the home to check on the individual.
By now I am sure many of you have guessed I am talking about the Reassurance Program.
It gives me great pleasure to present Aging Projects, Inc. 2016 Advocacy and Awareness Award to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Reassurance Program.

What is a volunteer? Well, how long do I have to answer that one simple but very profound question.
What is a volunteer?
It brings to mind a quote I remember from many years ago from an unknown author. “A volunteer is a person who is a light to others, giving witness in a mixed-up age, doing well and willing the tasks at hand-namely, being aware of another’s needs and doing something about it.”
The 2016 Volunteer of the Year is such a person. This individual has been our light keeping Aging Projects, Inc. pointed in the right direction. While steady fast in resolve, alternating course as needed. But always steady fast. Our light.

• 2015 – Advocacy and Awareness Award
MemoryCare
We pay tribute this year to a non-profit organization that has contributed excellence and creativity in caring for a special group of the senior population.
This organization emphasizes the rapidly growing need for appropriate assessment, treatment and support for individuals with cognitive impairment, and their families.
Like many health care innovations, MemoryCare began as a dream, a hope, and a vision. It began in the year 2000 with one physician, Dr. Margaret Noel, who believed that there was a better way to help patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive disorders. This approach would especially engage and support the caregivers.
Today, MemoryCare serves more than 4200 people per year throughout western North Carolina. The team now includes physicians, nurses and social workers along with an army of volunteers. The MemoryCare model has been taught and shared with numerous healthcare organizations, as well as with individuals. MemoryCare offers many programs including peer-support groups, educational outreach and educating caregivers.
Thank you for your service, your wisdom, and your care. On behalf of Aging Projects, Inc., it gives me great pleasure to present the 2015 Advocacy and Awareness Award to . . . . MemoryCare!

Every one of our providers has met our provider criteria, submitted an application, and completed the credential and license review. They must keep information current by a six-month up-date process.
Our 2015 Provider of the Year Award goes to a business and its owner, for an inspiring example of going far beyond all expectations. His creativity and tireless efforts changed the life of a disabled veteran.
When this individual learned of a veteran having great challenges due to mobility issues in his home, he stepped up to make a life-changing plan. He worked with the family to assess needs and then persevered to accelerate a grant from the VA. He solicited other providers to help modify the home, installing a ramp and completely remodeling the bathroom. His dedication greatly restored dignity to the veteran and reduced stress on the caregiver, the veteran’s wife.
This provider exemplifies efforts to help seniors, veterans and people with disabilities to have independence and a better quality of life while remaining in their own homes.

• 2014 – Volunteer of the Year
Jackie Branscum
This person is truly amazing. Anytime someone asked “Who will volunteer for . . .?” she would be answering “I will!” before the question was even complete.
Not only did she answer “I will”, but what she said she’d do, she did with alacrity, cheerfulness and perfection.
She has always been full of excellent ideas, with perfect organization when carrying them out. She has given her time, her energy and her talents to Aging Projects Inc. Our organization is where it is today because of her, one of our founding members and our Board secretary.
With our profoundest thanks and hopes that you’ll be with us for many many years more, please come forward and accept your award:
